Greenland : Fantasy of Trump and America

On 15th august Thursday, a report was published by the Wall Street Journal that President Donald Trump has expressed interest in buying Greenland , a long time Fantasy of people of America .Some of Trump advisers supported the concept, saying it’s a good economic play, while others have dismissed it as being unrealistic, the WSJ reported. Some sources Confirm to WSJ that buying Greenland will help Trump to win another term, Atleast President Donald Trump think so .But In clear term Greenland's local government has told him that Greenland is not for sale.

So before going further let us talk about some fact of Greenland.

 

 

Greenland is the Largest ISLAND in the world  and an autonomous part of kingdom of  Denmark located between Arctic and Atlantic ocean .Greenland is a Semi- self-ruling country which foreign and security policy is controlled by Denmark . 

Contrary to its Name Greenland it is not Green at all.Greenland is covered with massive ice sheet spans 660,200 square miles -- nearly 80% of the country's surface. It's freezing nearly year-round. That is why only 20% of the country's 836,300 square miles is inhabited by humans and some 56000 people live there . 

The society of Greenland follows Socialism, The country provides free health care, public education and pensions for all of its citizens, paid by Danish subsidies, The Economy of  Greenland is largely dependent upon fishing , which accounts for more than 90% of Greenland's exports.

The biodiversity of Greenland contains some 700 known species of insects, large amount of fish in sea and few hundreds polar bear ,arctic fox and musk ox ,which is very very low compared with biodiversity other countries. 

So question arises here why Americans have been trying to buy this piece of biggest Iceberg in the world Since 1867 ?

 

 

Yes , Donald Trump is not the only American president  who tried to buy Greenland .

Abraham Lincoln's secretary of state, William Seward was the first major Us office holder who considered the idea of buying Greenland in 1867. The deal failed due to Denmark government ,who intially show interest to sell it for decreasing its expenses but later pulled out . 

President Harry Truman  also reportedly tried to buy Greenland in 1946 but he also not able to do that ..

So Greenland has always been in the fantasy of American and its office bearer since 19th century and the reason they used to give is - 

 

1. Greenland's  strategic importance -  Since Greenland is situated between Arctic and Atlantic ocean . Us military already operates an air base in the northwestern coast of Greenland a part of defense agreement with Denmark.Thule Air Base is the U.S. military’s northernmost base and the only installation north of the Arctic Circle. It is home to the 12th Space Warning Squadron, a cadre of Air Force officers and enlisted personnel that provide 24/7 missile warning and space surveillance using a massive AN/FPS-132 radar.Thule’s position on the globe and its radar’s 240 degrees of coverage — which projects over the Arctic Ocean and Russia’s northern coast — make it an ideal location to track intercontinental ballistic missiles and satellites in low-Earth orbit, including polar orbit satellites. 

So look like US Military is not satisfied by just one base .They want it all.

Since China is also repeatedly attempting to gain infrastructure in Greenland. In 2016 China Tried to Buy an Old US Military base to increase its importance in region but Denmark vetoed it . Since 2018 a Chinese govt firm building a airport there . These things will further put pressure on Pentagon to increase its Control over the Island .

2.Greenland's Vast Natural Resources - Lots of Geographical Survey in this region suggested that there is a huge amount of Natural resources especially Natural Gases are present in Greenland . USA ( TRUMP) want to Explore those Resources .Since American love Natural Resources , They can go to any Extent to get it,  Most of the time  they destroy the whole country (Like - IRAQ ,Syria ) to get the Natural Resources .People of Green land are lucky that American are trying to buy them not destroy them .

According to Greenland 's Government Greenland is not for sell right Now , But what will happen in the future is yet to be seen . But One thing is Clear that due to Increasing Strategic competition in Arctic Reason and Huge natural Resources of Greenland, It will always remain  the Fantasy of President and People of America to buy this Island country .
