Ash leak in Reliance Coal Power plant in Madhya pradesh India

 

Singrauli a district in Madhya Pradesh remain under constant threat of man made disaster due to presence of 10 coal power plant . Three incident of breach in  artificial pond near power plants in Singrauli happened in the last one year . The latest one was of Reliance Coal Power plant  in which two villagers - a 35-year-old man and an eight-year-old boy - have died and four are missing after a breach in an artificial pond that stores toxic residue.Similar incident was reported by local media in which a fly ash dyke break at a plant operated by Essar in August and another run by NTPC Ltd in October.

30 members of the National Disaster Response Force or NDRF is involved in the search operation for other villagers. "So far two bodies of an eight-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man have been recovered from the ash slurry, around seven km away towards the border with Uttar Pradesh," said Singrauli District Collector KVS Chaudhary.

 

In a statement, Reliance Power said: "The break in the ash dump yard wall pushed the water leading to break in the boundary wall affecting some thatched houses and minor land parcel. The company added that it is investigating the reasons underlying the incident.  Power plant operations, which are not disrupting the relief work, continue, the company said. 

 

 

 A 2012 study by India's Centre for Science and Environment found mercury levels in blood samples in the region - home to over 10 coal-fired power plants - to be six times more than what is considered safe.After these kind of incidents the ash in the soil hit agricultural output for at least two seasons.These plants have made Singrauli the second-most critically polluted industrial zone in the country after Ghaziabad, according to the Central Pollution Control Board.

 

Just a few months back, a national green tribunal team had visited the area. All power companies had assured the team that their ash dykes were in good health and were being maintained. Singrauli is a critical zone in the country. Many directions have been passed in the past but no one seems to listen, said Ashwani Dubey in an interview ( reported by NDTV,) a lawyer who has fought cases related to pollution in Singrauli in the green court.

In August last year, after a similar breach in a power plant run by Essar, the company had alleged that it was a clear case of sabotage. However, a government report on the breach had blamed it on extreme carelessness by the company management  and held them responsible for a sub-standard boundary and not clearing waste material from the boundary.



This is really a critical situation if companies don't pay any heed to the rules and regulation since we all remember the long lasting effect of the Bhopal gas leak , the man made disaster which destroyed the life of lakhs of people . No one want that kind of things to be repeated again at any cost .

 

We are expecting from government and court to take strict action against all the companies which don't follow Safety rules which will help in avoiding such kind of incident in future .

What is Supermoon ? How does it affect our lives?

 




WHAT IS SUPERMOON ?

 

 

A supermoon is a full moon or a new moon that nearly coincides with perigee—the closest that the Moon comes to the Earth in its elliptic orbit—resulting in a slightly larger-than-usual apparent size of the lunar disk as viewed from Earth. . The term supermoon is astrological in origin and has no precise astronomical definition.supermoon" isn't a scientific term. By several accounts, it was first coined back in the late 1970s by an astrologer, Richard Nolle, who defined it as a new or full moon that occurs when the moon is within 90 percent of its closest approach to Earth in a given orbit — 224,641 miles or 361,524 kilometers from the planet. Given the change in distance between the moon’s farthest and closest points, the full moon can appear as much as 14% larger in the sky and 30% brighter to our eyes than at minimum size and brightness.

The technical name of Supermoon is a perigee syzygy (of the Earth–Moon–Sun system) or a full (or new) Moon around perigee .



WHAT CAUSES A SUPERMOON  ?




Supermoons happen because the moon doesn't orbit the earth in a perfect circle, but rather in an elliptical path. That means its distance from the Earth can vary in the course of a month, from 252,000 miles at its farthest point, which is called the apogee, to roughly 225,800 miles at its closest approach, which is called the perigee.
But the lunar orbit isn't perfectly regular, either, because it's affected by the sun's gravity. So on some occasions, the moon's perigee is closer than others.
Perigees happen on average every 29.53 days .

But a few times a year, the sun, moon and Earth line up just right, so that a perigee coincides with the most dramatic phases of the moon — the new moon, when the orb is just a sliver — or the full moon. That's when we notice because the moon can appear to be slightly bigger and significantly brighter than normal .



 







HOW DOES IT AFFECT OUR LIVES ?




Claims that supermoons can cause natural disasters, and the claim of Nolle that supermoons cause "geophysical stress", have been refuted by scientists.

Despite lack of scientific evidence, there has been media speculation that natural disasters, such as the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami and the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, are causally linked with the 1–2 week period surrounding a supermoon.A large, 7.5 magnitude earthquake centred 15 km north-east of Culverden, New Zealand at 00:03 NZDT on November 14, 2016, also coincided with a supermoon.

However Scientists have confirmed that the combined effect of the Sun and Moon on the Earth's oceans, the tide, is greatest when the Moon is either new or full.and that during lunar perigee, the tidal force is somewhat stronger, resulting in perigean spring tides. However, even at its most powerful, this force is still relatively weak, causing tidal differences of inches at most.

 

When the moon is closest to the Earth, its gravitational pull is at its peak.The variation from minimum lunar pull to maximum pull is roughly 23 percent. That sounds like a lot. However, it amounts to  less than 2000ths of the mass of the moon. The gravitational effect on a human being. Consider an 80-kilogram human being. The maximum difference between apogean and perigean moons is about 73 milligrams, or about 1/14th the mass of an ordinary paper clip.

If you factor in the solar gravity effect for a supermoon, or full moon closest to Earth, this effect may rise to about 110 milligrams, roughly equivalent to about 1/9th the mass of a paperclip.However moon do creates the tides. And an extra close moon can create higher-than-usual tides. But this doesn’t mean that an extra close new or full moon – a supermoon – has an effect on human beings.

 

 

 HOW CAN WE DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN SUPERMOON AND REGULAR SIZED NEW MOON ?  

Well, the distinction between a supermoon (what astronomers call a lunar perigree) and a regular-sized moon isn't so great that it's obvious to everyone, especially if you're not a regular gazer at the skies. If you want to make the difference clearer, astronomy writer Bob King suggests fashioning a homemade measuring device that he calls a "supermoon sighter."

Take a pair of scissors, and cut a series of slots of varying widths in an index card. Then hold the card parallel to your face and at arms' length while looking at the moon with one eye, and pick the slot into which the moon fits most snugly. Mark the date next to it. Then, when you hear the announcement of the next supermoon, repeat the procedure, and you should be able to see the difference.

How do mammals like Dolphins and Whales Sleep, breathe and drink in Sea






You must have been surprised in your school days when you would heard about whales and Dolphins are Mammals and very similar to human except they spend there whole life in water . Have you wondered How do they sleep in water without drowning ? Or , How do they Breathe in water using there Lungs ? Or ,  How do they drink salty water ? since We human cant survive in salty water .

Let us find out answers one by one .




How do whales and Dolphins breathe  air ?


Since Dolphins and Whales are mammals, they have lungs to breathe like humans not gills like Fish and they also cant use skin like frogs inside water to breathe .But they do need to breathe air (Oxygen) to survive . 





First of all Lungs of Dolphin is larger then human and Whales have largest lung in mammals . Human beings use only quarter of their Lung capacity when they breathe while Whale and dolphins use more capacity of there Lungs. apart from that there blood can store more oxygen then human being .Finally, these animals have a higher tolerance for carbon dioxide (CO2). Their brains do not trigger a breathing response until the levels of CO2 are much higher than what humans can tolerate. These mechanisms, part of the marine mammal diving response, are adaptations to living in an aquatic environment and also help during the process of sleeping. Cetaceans reduce the number of breaths they take during rest periods; a dolphin might average 8 to 12 breaths a minute when fairly active only to have their breathing rate drop to 3 to 7 per minute while resting.There is one more difference between human breathing and Marine mammals breathing that Humans can breathe while the conscious mind is asleep because our subconscious mechanisms have control of this involuntary system. But whales and dolphins must keep part of the brain alert to trigger each breath since they have equipped with voluntary respiratory system,
So Dolphins and Whales come near the surface of water for few seconds to gulf some air or we say for the process of breathing  and go back inside the water for hours . 




How do Whales and Dolphins sleep without drowning ?

 

 


Mammals living inside water such as whales and dolphins spend their entire lives at sea. So how can they sleep and not drown? Observations of bottlenose dolphins in aquariums and zoos, and of whales and dolphins in the wild, show two basic methods of sleeping: they either rest quietly in the water, vertically or horizontally, or sleep while swimming slowly next to another animal. Individual dolphins also enter a deeper form of sleep, mostly at night. It is called logging because in this state, a dolphin resembles a log floating at the water's surface.




When marine mammals sleep and swim at once, they are in a state similar to napping. Young whales and dolphins actually rest, eat and sleep while their mother swims, towing them along in her slipstream--a placement called echelon swimming. At these times, the mother will also sleep on the move. In fact, she cannot stop swimming for the first several weeks of a newborn's life. If she does for any length of time, the calf will begin to sink; it is not born with enough body fat or blubber to float easily. Lots of swimming will tire an infant, producing a weak animal susceptible to infection or attack. Adult male dolphins, which generally travel in pairs, often swim slowly side by side as they sleep. Females and young travel in larger pods. They may rest in the same general area, or companionable animals may pair for sleeping while swimming.






Dolphins generally sleep at night, but only for a couple hours at a time; they are often active late at night, possibly matching this alert period to feed on fish or squid, which then rise from the depths.While sleeping, the bottlenose dolphin shuts down only half of its brain, along with the opposite eye. The other half of the brain stays awake at a low level of alertness. This attentive side is used to watch for predators, obstacles and other animals. It also signals when to rise to the surface for a fresh breath of air. After approximately two hours, the animal will reverse this process, resting the active side of the brain and awaking the rested half. This pattern is often called cat-napping.To avoid drowning during sleep, it is crucial that marine mammals retain control of their blowhole. The blowhole is a flap of skin that is thought to open and close under the voluntary control of the animal.As I already discussed in previous question
Humans, can breathe while the conscious mind is asleep, our subconscious mechanisms have control of this involuntary system. But equipped with a voluntary respiratory system, whales and dolphins must keep part of the brain alert to trigger each breath. 







How can sea mammals drink salt water ? 







It unreasonable to assume that sea mammals can live on salt water any more than we can . The first thing that occurs to me is that their need of fresh water should be less then ours , because a lot of water we ingest , particularly during summer , is used to cool us through evaporation . Clearly , large sea mammals do not need this  - when the skin temperature rises all they need to do is slip down into the water for a while .DOLPHINS and other sea-dwelling mammals can obtain water from their food and by producing it internally from the metabolic breakdown of food.They have there own pure water factories inside there body . Unlike Human water is not a waste product of metabolism for them .
So Unlike land mammals, sea mammals don't drink water and produce them internally or either drink very very occasionally , Since they need very less water . Apart from that some of them have specialized Kidney to adapt to salty water.

How much time does It Take For a Drop of Rain to Reach the Ground from the Cloud ?






Meteorology is Very fascinating part of Science . One Side It looks Simple another but side Very Complicated . As We all Know Cloud Is formed as Water Evaporates in the form of its vapour , these vapour is wafted up to colder regions of the atmosphere where it condenses and forms clouds. Drops of moisture in the cloud are very tiny , its diameter is about 0.02 mm or less . They are Sustained up there due to collisions with air molecules. If the atmosphere were completely still and the cloud base low it would take them up to 10 hours to descend to the surface , But these are not a drop of  Rain just droplets of moisture .



So How much time a drop of rain takes to reach the Ground  ?



These 0.02 mm of diameter of moisture droplets in cloud coalesce together to become a reasonable - Sized rain drop of 0.2mm diameter . Such drops can start descending with increasing speed till they reach a terminal velocity when the air resistance becomes equal to the downward force of gravity. For a rain drop of 0.2 mm diameter , the terminal velocity is about 4 m/s . Terminal velocity will be higher for bigger drops and lower for smaller drop . 

So the time of descent will depend on the height of the cloud and the size of the raindrop .


Hence, for a drop of rain (average diameter of 0.2mm ) coming down with a speed (Terminal Velocity ) of 4 m/s from a cloud that is one kilometer high takes 4 minutes . The bigger size drop,diameter more than 0.2 mm will take less time while smaller size drop, diameter less than 0.2 mm will take more time .
